Gary Sanders, CPA

Gary has been in practice since 1984, previously as a partner in a larger firm, before returning to his roots as President of his own firm. This boutique-firm environment allows Gary and his staff to cater to the needs of clients he has represented for over 35 years.

The firm has expertise in the areas of Trusts and Estates, Co-op Audits, and Gary’s area of specialization which is centered on Tax issues and Consulting for businesses in varied industries. He has established relationships with second generations of business owners, and families. In addition to insuring the most effective tax planning, the Legal and Wealth management needs of families are coordinated by him with the respective advisors to insure all the needs of multi-generational families are met.

Gary also has extensive experience in supervising the Audits of Co-op and Condominiums, and working with the Boards to ensure compliance in providing timely and complete Financial Statements, in addition he assists in budgeting and operational cash flow needs with the Board and Management.

He is also past Treasurer of a Cooperative in Westhampton, where he had resided, and was instrumental in assisting both in re-financing and Building Improvement campaign.

Gary currently belongs to many CPA organizations:
   • The American Institute of CPA’s (AICPA), and also a member of the Personal Financial Planning Section.
   • New York State Society of Certified Public Accountants.
   • National Conference of CPA Practitioners, where he served as President of the Nassau/Suffolk Chapter and as President of their Educational Foundation, as well as his passion in having chaired the Management of Accounting Practice committee for many years.

Gary is especially proud to have served on various committees of his Synagogue, including Financial Secretary, and currently serves on the Board of Trustees of Merrick Jewish Centre, as an active member of the community.

Jan Macchia, CPA

Jan Macchia, CPA is the Senior Manager in the firm’s Cooperative and Condominium Audit Division. She has more than 20 years experience providing accounting, auditing, and Financial Statement reporting to entities in this specialized area.

She supervises and reviews all the audit workpapers and Financial Statements to assure compliance with generally accepted accounting and firm standards. Jan is in charge of the Peer Review documentation and programs of our firm and has successfully obtained the required acceptance of Peer Review as conducted through the AICPA.

After beginning her career at Deloitte, working on audits of small and medium companies, Jan went on to work as a Controller in private industries, before joining Gary in his prior firm. She has been with Gary Sanders CPA PC, and his predecessor firm, for the past 25 years.

Jan also has extensive training as a QuickBooks Pro Advisor, and experience designing accounting systems for various clients specific to their goals and needs.

In addition, she has an expertise and offers guidance in all areas of human resources and payroll compliance.

Laurie S. Chester

Laurie serves as our Firm Administrator. She has served in an administrative capacity her entire career in both law firms and CPA firms. She supervises the direct day-to day activities of the firm reporting to our Senior Audit Manager and President.

Laurie joined Gary Sanders, CPA PC, in February 2017, and is vital in all aspects of support services. She manages and is responsible for the electronic submission of all tax filings and works closely to ensure that all documentation is provided in all phases in our cooperative and condominium audits.

In addition, Laurie oversees all word-processing and other related services for the firm. Most importantly, Laurie works closely with the clients to ensure that all questions and concerns are properly addressed.

Allison Shafran

Allison Shafran is an Administrative Assistant at Gary Sanders CPA PC.

Her responsibilities include all aspects of support services including scheduling client meetings and managing our electronic storage documents and portal.

Allison is instrumental in managing the flow of client data and supporting updates of status of returns to each client, especially during the tax season. In addition, Allison updates and maintains our social media network and website.

Prior to joining our firm, Allison was an administrative assistant for another CPA firm. She also has a master’s degree in Education and was previously an elementary school teacher on Long Island.
